2010, The Year We Make Silly Word Puns

click here to read this entry on the new site

Here we are well into the new year already. How's it treating you so far?

My old buddies at Mega Man Network put up some fun end-of-decade articles. They seem to be under the impression that we're entering into 20XX this year, although we've technically been in 20XX for over 10 years now (both of those X's can stand for zeros) but at least we can all agree that 200X is now over.

The big news contender so far for MM fans is Mega Man 10 coming out in March of this year. Japanese gaming magagazine Game Side featured an article about it recently, and ran the first Rockman 10 ads which sport the tagline...
"Omoshirosa, kawarimaten!" (おもしろさ、変わりまテン!) That "-ten" replacing the normal "-sen" negative word ending. Generally translated, "Intense, they haven't changed a thing!" Ha ha, I am so clever. Hey companies, I'm available for ad copy work!

This year I intend to finish scanning those Mega Mission cards (I haven't forgotten), as well as to complete my next Rockman project, which I'm starting on officially right after I finish this post (tentatively). Check back often for updates!

Let's make 2010 one for the record books!

  1. Ohh, I've got something under wraps myself, and I'm hoping that it'll make a big splash once it's announced to the world.

I'm with you for making 2010 a great year... and happy new year to you!

  2. Hey, #20. Hadn't known you were back in the track - intend to follow the blog now that I've discovered it, as it seems rather informative. I'll guess maybe you remember me or not - it's not exactly like I was always the bigshot around.

Great job translating the Mega Mission cards, must say; there are more than one rip of them floating around so yeah, no harm done in waiting for HQ scans. The 'meat' of them had long become the text, and this more than got the job done, so kudos.

Though I hardly wish to steer more of your efforts still towards the X-Series - and 'request' at the same time in one swift posting - there's one thing I always wondered; I remember that Marino's concept art from Command Mission had something mentioning the Sigma Virus, but at the same time something about that 'lion-styled' weapon holder in her back SUPPOSED to be her 'foul-mouthed' partner, and we know these didn't make the cut.

As it appears it has been no clarity in it, and much as I dread the use of this word lately, what I wonder is - the segment where they talk about her searching for a "Sigma Virus cure" is something they went with (cue dreaded word, 'canon') or just meant to say that's something they wanted to use but was left at the concept table?

I'm just curious, seeing how a lot of people take it for face-value, but it is not a fact referred within the game itself, and most japanese pages dealing with profiles for the characters do not even touch the subject at all.

Don't mean to be a bother with this, but it's something I've wondered for a while. If it's needed, a link to the concept image can be easily found.

Sorry for the flat-out request and once again congratulations on the blog.

    Best,
    Rodrigo

  3. Hey guys, thanks for the comments!

Doc, I'm looking forward to whatever you've got up your sleeves!

Rodrigo, I think I do remember you from back in the day! I caught the articles you wrote about the Brazilian mangas on your site. Great stuff!

Those Command Mission concept pieces, it'd be a huge project but sometime it wouldn't be a bad idea to try to translate them. Several including some not found in the game's gallery are already included in the Mega Man X Official Complete Works book. They didn't include all the Marino details, but I was surprised they translated as much as they did with that tiny print. It's too bad they didn't use larger images and extend the Command Mission sketch section by several pages. It would have really filled the book out a bit since the classic Mega Man OCW volume is so much larger by comparison.

As far as my opinion is concerned, if the details in the concept designs aren't also confirmed elsewhere, then they aren't canon. Some of it could apply, but like you pointed out, other things surely don't. Marino's Sigma Virus motives are one of those questionable unconfirmed things. It's plausible, but non-canon. That's what I think.
